Manitoba teachers’ society

This room is being transformed at the Manitoba Teachers’ Society into a calming place of reflection and reconnection. A place where anyone can go to smudge, or take a minute to rest in between meetings, working, and presentations. I’ve titled this piece “Grounded Together”.

Grounded in the lands and waters of Manitoba, this mural honours Indigenous ways of knowing and invites all who enter to pause, reflect, and reconnect. Created for this shared space of quiet contemplation, it serves as a reminder that balance is not the absence of difference, but the willingness to listen, to understand, and to move forward with compassion.

Inspired by the teachings found within the natural world, the mural reflects the balance that exists between day and night, action and stillness, speaking and listening. The medicines represented throughout the artwork remind us of the importance of ceremony, healing, and our connection to the land.

The animals within the mural offer teachings to carry into our daily lives. The Eagle reminds us to lead with love, the Turtle teaches us truth, and the Owl offers wisdom and discernment. By drawing strength from these teachings, we are encouraged to approach one another with open hearts, thoughtful words, and respect.

Like the rivers that shape Treaty 1 Territory, and the seasons that continually transform the landscape, we are all connected. Every conversation has the potential to build understanding, strengthen relationships, and create space for growth. May this room offer a sense of peace and belonging, surrounded by the beauty of nature, and inspire moments of reflection that help us find balance within ourselves and compassion for one another.
