gENERAL WOLFE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

This installation reflects the teachings of balance, community, humility, and our relationship to the land. Anchored in the centre, we have the Medicine Wheel connected to Turtle Island, our shared home. The roots flowing throughout the shell symbolize how all living things are connected to one another, and how every action we take reaches beyond ourselves and impacts the community around us.

The imagery of night and day represents the cycles of time, change, and balance that exist throughout life and within the natural world. The sun, moon phases, rivers, medicines, plants, berries, and flowers all serve as reminders that the land continues to teach us, provide for us, and sustain us. The rivers flowing throughout the mural represent the waterways of Treaty 1 Territory, reminding us of the history, agreements, and responsibilities tied to the land we live upon. The phrase, “as long as the sun shines, the grass grows, and the rivers flow,” reflects the enduring relationship we are meant to uphold with the land and with one another.

The wolves within this mural were chosen not only to reflect the school’s identity, but also because of the teachings wolves carry. Wolves are deeply connected to family structure, teamwork, guidance, and humility. Within nature, even a single wolf pack plays a crucial role in maintaining balance within the ecosystem. In many ways, this mirrors humanity and the importance of community.  Every person, every family, every classroom, and every school has a purpose and a responsibility within the larger circle. The figures within the mural represent community, and future generations. No matter how small we may feel, we are all needed, and we all have something meaningful to contribute.

This artwork was created to honour the students’ desire for a piece that reflects living with the land, learning from the land, and giving back to the land and Indigenous communities. It is a reminder that strength comes through unity, and that humility allows us to recognize the value and purpose within all living beings. Just like the wolves, we survive and thrive through supporting one another, protecting one another, and remembering that we all belong to the same circle.
