DONWOOD SCHOOL

This mural, created for Donwood School, includes teachings of connection, balance, and responsibility to the land and each other. At the centre of this mural is the turtle, representing Turtle Island and the Creation Story, as well as truth from the Seven Sacred Teachings.

The turtle carries a living landscape in its shell, that includes representation of our three Indigenous groups in Manitoba, First Nations, Metis and Inuit. The orange beadwork flower honours the Every Child Matters movement, acknowledging the importance of remembrance and respect for the children.

The Medicine Wheel speaks to balance, cycles, and the interconnectedness of all people. The connecting lines between the Wheel, the turtle, and the natural world remind us that all who live on this land are connected to these teachings and to one another.

Surrounding animals represent the remaining Seven Teachings, embodying values including humility, honesty, love, courage, respect, and wisdom. Together, these values emphasize the importance of living together in a good way, and caring for community.

This mural is intended to be a welcoming and educational piece that encourages reflection on shared history, our connection and relationship to the land, and to each other.
